Ariel’s Hummus & Top of the Crop

With little competition in Maine for fresh-made, preservative-free hummus, Glazer decided to take the plunge and launch Ariel’s Hummus in May. As demand surged, he was soon spending 12 to 14 hours a day in the commercial kitchen at the Shaarey Tphiloh synagogue in Portland, cooking up hundreds of pounds of chickpeas every week.

Sunday — Petite Jacqueline is offering a 4-course tomato tasting menu (corn and tomato soup, cherry tomato risotto, fluke with pickled tomatoes, olive oil cake with tomato sorbet and macerated tomatoes).  The Well and Devenish Wines are hosting a 4-course dinner at Jordan’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth featuring local ingredients and wines from Dieberg Vineyard. It’s the last day of the St Peter’s Italian Bazaar.

Open Farm Day

The Press Herald has published a report on yesterday’s Maine Open Farm Day.

Open Farm Day is organized by the Department of Agriculture as an opportunity for people to visit local farms. With the “buy local” trend increasing, it is also a way for people to see where their food is coming from and meet the farmers. Throughout the day, more than 100 farms across the state opened their barn doors, offering demonstrations and farm-raised products for sale, as well as animals and crops to observe.

Bard Coffee is hosting their monthly Latte Art Throwdown; in July 16 baristas entered the competition. Saturday — the 9th Annual Festival of Nations is scheduled to take place on Saturday and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.

Kneading Conference & SoPo Farmers Market

Today’s Food & Dining section in the Press Herald includes an article on the upcoming Kneading Conference which is held annually in Skowhegan,

The goal of the Kneading Conference and Artisan Bread Fair, which will be held July 28-30, is to reinvigorate the business of growing, milling and selling local grains in Maine, once the breadbasket of New England. But “now we don’t even grow enough to supply ourselves,” said Michael Jubinsky of the Stone Turtle Baking and Cooking School in Lyman.

Judging by the throngs of customers and the fact that vendors were already selling out of items after an hour, it appears the South Portland market, which will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursdays through October, has tapped into an unmet demand.
