Monday evening, the Audubon Society’s book club is meeting to discuss Banana: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World, and the next Piatto per Tutti cooking class is taking place. There will be wine tastings at Old Port Wine Merchants on Wednesday and Leavitt and Sons on Thursday. Thursday night, The Cheese Iron is teaching a class on Fall cheeses, and The Great Lost Bear is showcasing the beer of Victory Brewing. On Saturday, the Audubon Society is holding their Apple Day celebration. Farmers’ Markets are taking place in Monument Square on Wednesday and at Deering Oaks Park on Saturday. Woodpile Photo Contest
Matt’s Wood Roasted Organic Coffee in Pownal is running a photography competition. To enter you need to send in a photo of your woodpile by midnight November 15—no that’s not a typo, it’s really a woodpile photo comptetion. According to Matt’s site, the photos will be judged on “image composition and creativity, the skill and industriousness of the stacker, our own whim and state of indigestion, and the like.” The winner gets a free supply of Matt’s coffee beans. As reported by Portland Psst!, Big Mama’s Diner will be going out of business. A call to the diner has confirmed that Sunday will be their last day. I’ve heard that Papaya King may be moving into the space at 5 Dana Street.

Myers for City Council
John Myers has launched a write-in campaign for a seat on the Portland City Council with the slogan of “Change we can count!” Myers works as the bartender and The Grill Room and writes a monthly column entitled The Land of the Forgotten Cocktail for The Bollard.
