Bayside Bowl Expanding to SoPo

Bayside Bowl (website, facebook, instagram) is in the process of buying the former Sea Dog bowling alley in South Portland where they plan to open Broadway Bowl (instagram) this fall.

The new outpost will be modeled after the original Bayside Bowl with some overlap in food and drink menus and a similar experience at the smaller South Portland location. The back side of the building is adjacent to the cycling/pedestrian trail and features a 52-seat enclosed deck with a view of Casco Bay.

Broadway Bowl will be a 10-lane bowling alley. Owner Charlie Mitchell plans to take the same approach to equipment and maintenance and there will be opportunities for  tournament and league play.

Sea Dog Brewing closed their Broadway bowling alley in April of 2023. Bayside Bowl launched their operation on Alder Street in Portland on June 1, 2010.

Maine Food & Dining News

  • The Danish at Jackrabbit got a shoutout in the July edition of Food & Wine. The recognition came via fellow Biddeford baker Kelsey Mari Morgan who wrote, “It’s tough to forget a beautifully made pastry that celebrates seasonal fruit. I’m a sucker for summer berries, and Jakrabbit’s strawberry Danish, filled with locally grown strawberries, is a special kind of treasure.”
  • The Bangor Daily News shared a report on two Midcoast restaurants featuring French cuisine: Bistro La Cave (website, instagram) which recently opened in Camden and Alsace (instagram) which is expected to open later this summer in Union.
  • Mainebiz reports that Waterville-based Sunrise Bagel will be  opening a second location in Augusta.

New Restaurant in OPT Space

Wills Dowd and Jared Dinsmore, the owners of Bird & Co, have leased the former Old Port Tavern space where they plan to open a new restaurant. The menu and concept are still to be determined.

Dinsmore and Dowd have begun a complete renovation of the 5,000+ sq ft space. They don’t expect to launch the new restaurant until spring 2024.

Bird & Co. launched March 12, 2019. It’s located at 539 Deering Ave in Woodfords Corner. The Old Port Tavern closed on New Year’s Eve 2022 after 50 years in business.

Entrepreneur and cycling enthusiast Tom Ruff shifted gears from medical recruiting to gluten-free brewing, with plans to launch Orange Bike Brewing in Portland later this year. With construction still in progress at 31 Diamond St. in Portland, he gave Mainebiz the lowdown.

For more information on Orange Bike Brewing see this report on the brewery.

Lake & Co. Moving to Yarmouth

After five years of working out of Fork Food Lab, Lake & Company (website, facebook, instagram) is moving to Yarmouth. They’ll be occupying the 3,000 sq ft commercial kitchen at 881 Route 1 in the building that had formerly been the home of Maples.

It’s bittersweet to leave our friends and colleagues at Fork Food Lab. To our incredible staff and devoted clients, we would not be the company we are today without you. It feels a bit like growing up and leaving your family home! This move is a symbol of how much we have grown and accomplished over the past 5 years and we are very humbled.

Owner Hannah Lake White expects to continue offering weekly menus, prepared foods, frozen meals, and desserts for both delivery and pick up.

Little Pig on Walker Street

A new restaurant called Little Pig (website, instagram) has moved into the former Figgy’s location in the West End.

Owners Michael and Piyathida Macdonnell will be serving a menu of what they’re calling “Thai-ish” cuisine—dishes that bring together elements of their Maine and Thai backgrounds.

We hope to bring a little bit of our family’s dinner table to yours with our first take away location. In our blended family of South East Asian and East Coast folks, we try to bring a lot of fun and a lot of flavor.

Food on the streets have been some of our favorites. If we can achieve just a little bit of that far-east feeling here in Portland, our hearts will be full.

We plan on offering some familiar classics and some new ideas. Our goals are to always be approachable and always be full flavored.

While they’re still working on a full menu and launch, the Macdonnell’s will be holding Little Pig pop-up (see menu below) this coming Saturday through Monday, 2 pm – 6 pm. Little Pig is located at 722B Congress Street on the back side of the Yordprom Coffee building.

The 10-tap draft system will serve beer, wine, cider and seltzer, and they plan to also serve a limited range of bottled wine.

Poole and Phillips are the co-owners of the Maine Brew Bus. The Portland Beer Hub is located at the corner of Pearl and Fore Streets in Boothby Square.

Angoor Wine Bar

Portland Old Port has the story on the Angoor Wine Bar (instagram) which is under development at 100 Fore Street in the new WEX building.

Angoor will be a self-pour wine bar serving a few dozen wines which customers can dispense in 2, 4 and 6 ounce pours. Owners Sangeeta Nasiff and Rafael Dones plan to also serve beer, cocktails and small plates sourced from established local businesses. The owners hope to open Angoor this fall.
