Gelato Street

Instant Portland has posted a look at Fore Street’s 2 gelato shops: Gorgeous Gelato and Gelato Fiasco.

I suspect you’re expecting me to come down on one side or the other – to pick a shop as the top gelato shop in the city. I’m not going to. Instead, I’m going to encourage you to try them both and see which one you like the best. Like chocolate and vanilla, they are very different shops but each delicious in their own way.  Fore Street is one of the most visible locations in the city, with heavy foot traffic, and I’m confident that both shops will do well…

  1. Just a note – it’s really intended to be more of a profile of The Gelato Fiasco, just using the other place as a point of reference.

I had no idea that people in Portland were so … passionate … about their gelato.

  2. “I suspect you’re expecting me to come down on one side or the other – to pick a shop as the top gelato shop in the city. I’m not going to. ” We’ll, she admitted she didn’t even eat at Gorgeous Gelato. So I’m really glad she didn’t come down on one side or the other. Weak. If someone’s going to write a few thousand word about “Gelato Wars” you’d think she could take the trouble to eat at both – even if it is really a profile of just one. And what experience leads her to believe that both will thrive? Her extensive Portland retail experience? Wishful thinking doesn’t make it happen. Businesses compete, and all the happy smiley crap doesn’t help at all.

  3. Yeah, this whole thing still really bugs me. I really dislike the name Gelato Fiasco, I really REALLY dislike “inspired by Italy, perfected in maine”, and there really is a lot of chemical junk in their “gelato”. Why? Then to open right across the street from a couple that moved from italy to try to make a living selling gelato in portland, it’s just lousy, sorry, it is. And the Gelato is just WAY better at Gorgeous. I hope Portland squashes “Fiasco of Brunswick’ just like Florence did when Siena tried to invade.
