This Week’s Events: Portland Beer Week, Blind IPA Tasting, Krista at Flanagan’s, Cocktail Making Class

MondayPortland Beer Week continues. Be sure to check portlandbeerweek.org for the full calendar of PBW events. I’ve included a few of the highlights below. The Thirsty Pig is hosting a New England Beer dinner.

Tuesday — the Maine Brew Bus and Portland Taste Tours are coordinating a traveling beer dinner that starts at Bunker Brewing and continues on to stops at Local 188, Sonny’s and Salvage BBQ.

Wednesday — a blind tasting of 10 IPA’s with a $500 prize to whoever can correctly identify them all, a 4-course beer dinner at Bull Feeney’s, and the Monument Square Farmers Market is taking place in the morning.

Thursday — a 5-course Marshall Wharf dinner at East Ender, a 4-course Allagash dinner at the Inn by the Sea.

Friday — a screening of Strange Brew at the Urban Farm Fermentory.

Saturday — Novare Res is holding the Where the Wild Beers Are sour beer fest, and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.

Sunday — the Hunt & Alpine Club is teaching a holiday cocktail making class, Krista Kern Desjarlais is the featured chef at a sold out Flanagan’s Table farm dinner, and the American Sommelier foundation series will be featuring wines from Italy.

Tandem/Rosemont: Kabaj Tasting

Map & Menu have posted a report from last week’s Kabaj wine event. The wine and food tasting was a collaboration between Rosemont and Tandem.

Learning a new cuisine in the weeks leading up to the event proved to be an easy task for the talented chef, and we were fortunate to enjoy meats that he had cured himself, a regional bean, pork, and cabbage soup, potica nut rolls, and a tasty salted bread that accompanies many Slovenian meals. The night was capped off with an optional cup of the best espresso in town, and as Meredith and I made our way home that evening, we couldn’t help but think of what an enjoyable date night these pairings might make in the months to come.

Portland Beer Week

Today’s edition of the Press Herald includes an article about Portland Beer Week and a comprehensive calendar of all 75 PBW events.

Portland Beer Week begins Friday and runs through Nov. 10. It’s only the event’s second year, but last year’s Beer Week was so successful there was never really any question that it would have an encore. Allison Stevens, owner of the Thirsty Pig on Exchange Street, owns the event and began meeting last January with about 10 other organizers to evaluate the best and the worst from last year and plan activities for this year.

This Week’s Events: Maine Food Means Business, The Holy Donut, Halloween, Portland Beer Week

Tuesday — the Maine Food Means Business Conference kick’s off in Freeport.

WednesdayThe Holy Donut’s new location on Exchange Street will be opening at 7am, it’s the second day of the Maine Food Means Business Conference, and the Monument Square Farmers Market is taking place in the morning.

Thursday — It’s Halloween there will be a Hallowine tasting at Aurora Provisions, Taste Tours will be leading a trick or treat tour of the Old Port, and Hugo’s will be serving a Halloween Curiosities Dinner.

Friday — it’s the start of Portland Beer Week, see portlandbeerweek.org for a full calendar of the all PBW activities taking place November 1-10. There will be a wine tasting at the West End Deli and it’s the November edition of First Friday Art Walk.

Saturday — the Maine Brewers Festival will be held at the Expo, LeRoux Kitchen and Browne Trading are holding wine tastings, and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.

Sunday — Petite Jacqueline kicks off their fall movie night series with a screening of Entre Les Bras.

Winter Farmers Market — the Winter Farmers Market will be starting up on December 7. This year they’ll be located at the Urban Farm Fermentory on Anderson Street in East Bayside.

This Week’s Events: Harvest on the Harbor, Food Day, Pumpkin Beers, Wine Dinners

Tuesday — there will be a wine tasting at Rosemont on Congress Street and the 6th Annual Indie Biz awards presentation is taking place.

Wednesday —, it’s the opening day of Harvest on the Harbor, Piccolo is hosting a wine dinner, the Mayor is hosting a public forum on his Healthy and Sustainable Food System initiative, there will be a wine tasting at Rosemont on Brighton, and the Monument Square Farmers Market is taking place in the morning.

Thursday — It’s Food Day 2013, Piccolo will reprising their wine dinner from the prior night, Tandem and Rosemont are collaborating on a tasting event, the El Rayo Cantina is holding a Harvest Dinner, a tasting is taking place at the Bier Cellar, the Great Lost Bear will be showcasing pumpkin beers, and it’s the 2nd day of Harvest on the Harbor.

Friday — both the Cumberland Club and BiBo’s are holding wine dinners, and it’s the 3rd day of Harvest on the Harbor.

Saturday — Rosemont is holding a Harvest Festival at their location on Commercial Street, it’s the 4th day of Harvest on the Harbor, and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.

Sunday — American Sommelier is teaching a class on Spanish wines.

Food Day 2013

The Root has published an overview of Food Day 2013.

The third annual Food Day is almost here and things are revving up! We’ve got one week till the now annual celebration of healthy, affordable, and sustainable food happens on Thursday, October 24. Year-round, Food Day is devoted to mobilizing support for policies that advance healthier diets, promote sustainable and organic agriculture, reduce hunger, reform factory farms, and support fair working conditions for food and farm workers. The special focus of Food Day 2013 will be to encourage children to cook—and to encourage adults who can cook to pass on their skills.

Bols Punch Crawl: Eventide, Hunt & Alpine, Sonny’s

Bols Genever and Thirst Boston have worked with three Portland establishments to organize a Punch Crawl this Monday.

Each bar will be doing a different punch using Bols Genever. Punch Crawl staff will be at each destination to buy your drink for you and giving away Bols/Thirst Boston swag.

Here is the schedule:

  • 4:30 – 6, Eventide Oyster Bar
  • 6 – 7:30, Portland Hunt & Alpine Club
  • 7:30 – 9, Sonny’s

It sounds like just the sort of event that will have Neal Dow spinning in his grave.

This Week’s Event: Resurgam, Austrian Wine, High & Mighty, MSBA Annual Meeting, Caledonia Happy Hour, Harvest, Natural Wines, Miyake Farm Dinner

Tuesday — Allagash is releasing the latest batch of their Resurgam coolchip beer, and Local Sprouts is hosting the monthly Local Foods Networking Breakfast.

Wednesday — Hugo’s is serving an Austrian wine dinner, and the Monument Square Farmers Market is taking place in the morning.

Thursday — the Bier Cellar is holding a High & Mighty beer tasting, the head distiller of Caledonia Spirits in Vermont will be Hunt & Alpine for a special Caledonia themed happy hour, there will be a wine and cheese tasting at the Public Market House, and the Great Lost Bear will be showcasing the beer of Otter Creek.

Friday — Novare Res will be serving a wide area of ciders at their Fall Harvest event.

Saturday — the annual meeting of the Maine State Beekeepers Association is taking place, Tandem and Rosemont are collaborating on an Austrian wine tasting event, there will be a wine tasting at Browne Trading, and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.

SundayMiyake will be serving a farm dinner in Freeport at Wolfe’s Neck Farm, Fernet Branca Industry Night is taking place at Hunt & Alpine, and American Sommelier is teaching a class on organic and biodynamic natural wines.

Portland Taste Tours (facebook, twitter) launched recently. On October 22 they’re organizing a tour of the Rooms restaurants led by Harding Lee Smith. They’re also partnering with the Maine Brew Bus on a traveling beer dinner on featuring Rising Tide beer and food at Outliers Eatery, Little Tap House, Portland and Rochester and Love Cupcakes.
