Under Construction: Rosemont

The Portland Phoenix has published an article about the new Rosemont Market retail space that’s under construction on Brighton Ave.

In September, that will change. Rosemont is expanding its bakery by opening a new retail store just across the street from its non-peninsula location, at the corner of Brighton Avenue and Colonial Road. The current (soon-to-be former) retail location will be dedicated to the bakery, doubling the size of its existing work area.

Trader Joe's Commentary

Friday’s Portland Daily Sun includes an update on Trader Joe’s new store—the latest word is their aiming for a November 1 opening. The newspaper’s editor also looks at how Trader Joe’s fits with a Buy Local philosophy.

Heaven knows I’ll be there, no doubt fighting for a parking spot. But I’ll take some comfort in an interview we did a while back with Doug Fuss, the Bull Feeney’s operator who served on the city’s Task Force on Business Diversity … that’s the anti-chain gang.

I asked “does embracing “Trader’s” make us traitors to our buy-local, down-with-chains creed?

“The quick answer is ‘yes,'” responded Fuss, “but the longer answer is ‘no.'”

Mike's Profiled in the Sun

Mike Fink, owner of Mike’s the new sandwich shop that soon to open on Congress Street, was the subject of an article in the Saturday Portland Daily Sun.

A few weeks ago I took a quick walk through the restaurant with Mike. I could see how comfortable this spot will be when it opens. The room is bright and has an easy in-and-out sandwich shop feel. The selections will be many. According to Fink, they will offer not only sandwiches, but paninis, salads, burritos, quesadillas, smoothies, floats, as well as a variety of soft drinks and take-out beer.
