ThursdayBarton Seaver will be speaking at the Maine Historical Society, and The Great Lost Bear is showcasing beers from Odd Alewives Farm Brewery.

FridayMaine Oyster Company (websitefacebookinstagram) is opening their 30-seat oyster bar at 38 Portland Street, and there will be a wine tasting at Rosemont in the West End.

Saturday – there will be a wine tasting at LeRoux Kitchen, and the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market is taking place.

SundayThe Hungry Collective group of food trucks will be gathering at 1 Industrial Way.

Thursday – The Great Lost Bear is showcasing beer from Cushnoc Brewing.

Friday – monks from America’s only Trappist brewery, Spencer Brewing, will be at the Bier Cellar (3-5) for a tasting, and at Novare Res (5-7) for a tap takeover.

Saturday – Novare Res is celebrating Cantillon Zwanze Day, and the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Sunday – 20+ restaurants (Evo, Chaval, Little Giant, Woodford F&B, Purple House, etc), caterers, food producers and wine distributors are collaborating on Pigs & Pink – “Chef-Driven, Pig-Inspired Goodness paired with a Rosé round-up from Maine’s finest wine distributors” –aka a pig roast with a lot of rosé and good food taking place at Broadturn Farm. The event is organized by and a benefit for Full Plates Full Potential, an innovative organization dedicated to eliminating child hunger in Maine.

Pigs & Pink

20+ restaurants (Evo, Chaval, Little Giant, Woodford F&B, Purple House, etc), caterers, food producers and wine distributors are collaborating on Pigs & Pink – “Chef-Driven, Pig-Inspired Goodness paired with a Rosé round-up from Maine’s finest wine distributors” –aka a pig roast with a lot of rosé and good food taking place at Broadturn Farm on September 30th.

The event is organized by and a benefit for Full Plates Full Potential, an innovative organization dedicated to eliminating child hunger in Maine.

A Really Big Sandwich

A group of sandwich  shops are collaborating to make a 144 foot long Maine Italian sandwich this Thursday, reports the Press Herald.

If you’re a fan of the Maine Italian, head to Monument Square Thursday to get a bite of what is being billed as the World’s Largest Maine Italian Sandwich. At least eight local sandwich shops plan to meet there at 11 a.m. Each will construct 16 feet of its own signature Maine Italian. Together, they hope to construct a finished sandwich that is 144 feet long.

Tuesday – chef Jake Stevens will be holding a Leeward pasta pop-up dinner at The Honey Paw.

Wednesday – there will be a wine tasting at the Old Port Wine Merchants, and the Monument Square Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Friday – There will be a wine tasting at the Rosemont in the West End.

Saturday – the Cape Elizabeth Kitchen Tour is taking place, as is the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market.

Sunday – LB Kitchen is hosting a Salt and Sauce dinner.

5th Annual Heirloom Apple Tasting

The Righteous Russet and Portland Food Map have once again teamed up to organize the Annual Heirloom Apple Tasting taking place Monday October 8th at 2 and 6 pm at the Island Creek Oyster Shop on Washington Ave.

Have you ever tasted a Hudson Golden Gem, Fameuse, or Thomas Jefferson’s favorite apple, the Esopus Spitzenburg? Come to the apple tasting to try a wide range apples handpicked in New England’s orchards and learn more about this iconic fall fruit from apple columnist Sean Turley.

Our host, The Shop, will be running a cash bar during the tasting stocked with several hard ciders from across the region that are well worth drinking. Complimenting the fresh apple tasting, the event will also include apple-based treats prepared by chefs and bakers from several local establishments.

TuesdayChaval is holding a 4-course cocktail dinner, and their will be a wine tasting at Bow Street.

Wednesday – It’s the opening day of Chocolats Passion, the 2nd Annual Dine OUT for Equality and the Monument Square Farmers’ Market are taking place.

Thursday – Lio is holding an Austrian/Hungarian wine dinner, and there will be panel discussion on childhood hunger in Maine at the Maine Historical Society.

Friday – There will be a wine tasting at the Rosemont on Brighton.

Saturday – It’s the opening day of gluten-free Roots Cafe in Westbrook, and the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market is taking place.

SundayPiccolo is celebrating their 5-year anniversary with a 30-course Panarda dinner, there will be a Falchini wine dinner at Solo Italiano, and the September edition of Flea Bites is taking place in Congress Square Park.

Take a Bite Out of Appledore

Chefs Sam Hayward and Evan Mallett (Black Trumpet) are helping lead an eco-culinary island retreat on Appledore Island September 1-3.

Participants will forage for edible plants across the island, exploring trails and gardens, both maintained and wild. Along the rocky shore, comb for molluscs and seaweed, much like the island’s colonial inhabitants. Ship out to sea in search of oceanic fish and benthic life as you learn each species’ role in Gulf of Maine fisheries.

Dinners will be served en plein air with ocean views abound and the calls of passing seabirds in your ears. Sit with a glass of wine in hand as the smell of steamed shellfish wafts off your plate.
