A new business called Novel Book Bar & Cafe (@nove A new business called Novel Book Bar & Cafe (@novelmaine) is under construction at 643 Congress Street. Business partners Joshua Ames and Nate Donovan are hoping to open their doors by January.
Novel will be a combination cafe and bar “nestled in the ambience of books” where customers can socialize with friends, work and read. Novel will eventually also include an event space where they plan to host local musical talent, book readings and other performances.
Ames and Donovan plan for Novel to “capture the spirit of the growing American trend of Book Bars and to be reminiscent of the classic European Cafe Bar. Come for atmosphere, good company, and great service.”
Novel will be house-roasting their own coffee with beans sourced from Guatemala, and will have a full liquor license serving beer, wine and cocktails. Ames and Donovan are getting help on the development of their menu from Jason and Amy Cote from Cote’s Cafe in One Portland Square. #portlandmaine #novelbookbarcafe #bookbar #guatamalancoffee

Shown here is their wonderful raspberry shortcake and a plate of housemade tagliatelle with heirloom tomato sauce, guanciale and snap pea slaw.
Dinner is served Fridays and Saturdays 5 – 8 pm. See the 2nd to last pic in the series for their recent dinner specials menu. #southportlandmaine #mainefood #verbena #raspberryshortcake #taglliatelle

Owners Jason Loring, Matt Moran, and Tobey Moulton Owners Jason Loring, Matt Moran, and Tobey Moulton closed on the sale of @noshkitchenbar to Michael Fraser, Michael Barbuto and Kevin Doyle on Monday. They expect to reopen Nosh later this week.
The new owners plan to remain true the spirit of Nosh with a focus on well executed comfort food. They will be keeping some of the standards from the Nosh menu and folding in some new ideas of their own including a classic cocktail program. Chef Aaron Taylor was been hired to lead the kitchen.
In addition to Nosh, Barbuto and Doyle are currently working to launch The Continental on Brighton Ave. The pair also are co-owners with Fraser at @cbgportland.
Loring has been involved in the launch of a number of new restaurants since Nosh opened in 2010. He’s currently focusing his time on the @slabportland retail pizza business. Moran is partnering with Joe Fournier in the relaunch of A & C in South Portland. #noshkitchenbar #portlandmaine #newowners
The highly anticipated cocktail bar and restaurant The highly anticipated cocktail bar and restaurant @thedanforthportland will be opening this Friday at 4 pm. It’s located at the corner of Danforth and Clark Streets in the West End.
The space has been completely redesigned:
“Upon entering the space, guests will encounter a 12-seat bar, the vivid focal point of the room with cascading liquor steps, surrounded by deep-hued banquettes, tables, and nooks. By day, the space provides big, generous windows that allow Golden Hour to soak into every corner. At night, the shades are drawn tighter, and a layered design reveals itself – with soft, inviting furnishings and lived-in décor. The designers, AAmp Studio, seamlessly integrate rich colors, textures, and eased millwork throughout the space, resulting in a classic yet playful ambience that evokes a sense of discovery. For guests looking to dine al fresco, an intimate outdoor patio behind the 75-seat restaurant lounge will offer full service, as well, beginning in August.”
The Danforth is the Portland outpost of Gin & Luck the parent company of @deathandcompany which operates craft cocktail bars in New York, Los Angeles and Denver. Their most recent book Death & Co Welcome Home: A Cocktail Recipe Book was a 2022 Beard Award nominee.
In addition to the specialty cocktails (7th photo) that Gin & Luck establishments are known for, the beverage program also includes draft/bottled cider and beer, and a mix of more traditional and contemporary wines by the glass and bottle. The head bartender is Carlo Caroscio. with the beer and wine selection put together by general manager Lucy Comaskey. The Golden Slumbers cocktail (3rd photo) is prepared with apple and pear brandies, blanc vermouth, appertivo bianco and verjus.
The kitchen is led by Michael Boomhower who has put together a menu (8th photo) that “celebrates honest, nourishing food with a focus on regional product”. When you visit The Danforth do not miss out on the roasted chicken which is served with smoked butter pan sauce, corn, shishito peppers and chilis. Boomhower hales from Vermont. In Portland he has most recently worked at Central Provisions and Union.
The Danforth will be open 7 days a week, 4 pm – 1 am.
