This Week’s Events: Elderberry Workshop, Patio to The Point, Blue Point, Symphony + Spirits, Knightsville Brewpub

sandslogoTuesday — there will be an Italian wine tasting at Otherside Deli, an elderberry syrup workshop at the Portland Coop, and Julia & Craig Dilger are holding a meeting at CIA Cafe to talk about the new brewpub they have under development in Knightsville.

Wednesday — the Monument Square Farmers’ Market is taking place.

ThursdayRising Tide is holding a launch party for Waypoint a coffee porter made with Tandem beans, there will be a cider and cheese tasting at the Public Market House and a wine tasting at the Brighton Ave Rosemont.

FridayBissell Brothers is teaming up with CN Shawarma, Mami, Locally Sauced, Fishin’ Ships and High Roller Lobster on an outdoor beer dinner at Thompson’s Point called Patio to The Point.

SaturdayLeRoux Kitchen is holding a wine tasting, Blue Point Brewing is holding a Boatyard Bash on Union Wharf, and the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Sunday –the Portland Symphony is teaming up with Novare Res for a new edition of Symphony + Spirits. For $20 you get a ticket to the PSO concert and a post-concert Oktoberfest beer at Novare Res with 70+ other 21-40 year olds who participate.

Fabulous Femmes Dinner (Updated)

Five of Maine’s best chefs—all women—are coming together in October to co-produce a dinner at Flanagan’s Table. Ilma Lopez from Piccolo, Melissa Kelly from Primo, Krista Kern Desjarlais soon from The Purple House, Cara Stadler from Tao/Bao Bao and Kim Rogers from Hugo’s are teaming for a Flanagan’s Table dinner in October to benefit the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.

The chefs will be joined by Briana Volk from Hunt & Alpine who will be providing the cocktails, Tabitha Perry from Crush Distributors who will provide the wine and Alex Wright from Flanagan’s who donated the space for the fundraiser, as well as Briana Holt and Kathleen Pratt from Tandem serving baked goods with the pre-dinner cocktails and coffee respectively, and Catherine Eliot from Portland Patisserie who will supply the take home baked goods.

Tickets are on now sale On the Flanagan’s Table website. (Update: The dinner sold out in 3 minutes on Wednesday)

TuesdayPiccolo is collaborating with Roustabout on a preview pop-up dinner, Ed Lutjens will be giving a coopering demonstration at Maine Craft Distilling.

Wednesday — the Monument Square Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Thursday953 Congress Street is holding a Grand Opening, and a women’s Whiskey and Chocolate Truffle tasting is taking place at Grace.

Friday — there will be a wine tasting at the West End Deli, and it’s also First Friday Art Walk so restaurants will be busy – be sure to make your reservations soon.

Saturday — The Thirsty Pig is holding their 3rd annual Oktoberfest, and the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market is taking place.

The Sinful Kitchen – is kicking off a Filipino dinner series on October 16th.

TuesdayThe Honey Paw will be in Boston to prepare a dinner in collaboration with Kaki Lima.

WednesdayPulp+Wire will teach a workshop on launching a food brand, Salvage BBQ is hosting a launch party for Beer 101 (Banded Horn x Owl & Whale brewing collaboration), and the Monument Square Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Thursday — the Public Market House is holding a wine and cheese tasting.

FridayRising Tide is kicking off their 5th Anniversary celebration with a beer and oysters event that will feature Mockingfish on draft, and it’s the first day of the Common Ground Fair.

Saturday — it’s the second day of the Common Ground Fair, and the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Sunday — it’s the last day of the Common Ground Fair.

Rabelais at BU — Rabelais owner Don Lindgren will be speaking at Boston University on September 21st. His talk is part of the Pépin Lecture Series in Food Studies and Gastronomy and is entitled Anatomy of a Cookbook. “Beyond the recipes, cookbooks reveal a great deal about the authors who write them and the cooks who use them. This presentation will look at clues cookbooks reveal about social and cultural context, and consider how evidence of reader use illuminates issues of ownership, succession, revision, criticism, navigation, and more.”

Under Construction: Roustabout

Roustabout(twitter, instagram, facebook, website) is making very good progress on building out their space on Washington Ave. Shown here is the 18-seat bar that occupies the right side of the dining area. The restaurant will also include a private dining room that will seat up to 20. Owners Kit Paschal and Anders Tallberg are on track to open the restaurant later this Fall.

Roustabout is serving a pop-up dinner on Thursday at Tandem Bakery. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.

Beard House Dinners: Piccolo, Hunt & Alpine

A pair of Portland establishments will be servings meals at the James Beard House in NYC later this year:

  • Piccolo will be serving an dinner on November 21st that highlights their take on cuisine from the Abruzzi and Calabria regions of Italy.
  • Hunt & Alpine will be serving a 5-course cocktail dinner on December 4th to celebrate Repeal Day. The meal will be a “full Scandinavian holiday-style dinner”.

Monday — chefs Yana Gilbuena from the Salo Series and Dave Mallari from The Sinful Kitchen are collaborating on a Filipino brunch, and it’s the last day in business for Mama’s CrowBar.

Wednesday — the Monument Square Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Thursday — the first performance of Inside, Outside, Above, Below collaboration with Masa Miyake, aand there will be a wine and cheese tasting at the Public Market House.

FridayKate McCarty (aka Cake McParty) will be reading from her new book Distilled in Maine and Steve Corman from Vena’s Fizz House will be serving drinks at the Maine Historical Society.

SaturdayLeRoux Kitchen is holding a wine tasting, and the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Sunday — Rosemont is serving a dinner at Winter Hill Farm in Freeport.

Roustabout x Tandem — Roustabout will be serving a pop-up dinner at Tandem Bakery on September 17th.

CMS Sommelier Classes

Instructors from the Court of Master Sommeliers will be returning to Portland this Fall to offer:

  • The Introductory Sommelier Course & Exam, a 2-day program that’s the first step in developing a strong foundation of knowledge about wine. Last year’s 50-person class sold with students coming from as far away as NYC.
  • Instructors will be administering the Certified Sommelier Examination, which includes both theory and blind tasting components.

The intro class is scheduled for October 6-7, and the Certified Sommelier exam is taking place on October 8. All three days are taking place at The Regency. You can learn more and sign-up for either option on the CMS website.

The classes are geared towards wine professionals or those considering a career in the wine industry, however a few highly motivated wine enthusiasts also join in.
